Have a lot of iron (rust) in your water supply? Consider getting a iron  filter, also called a green sand filter. These filters have a special cartridge that specifically removes iron from your water supply. It uses manganese greensand to oxidize and filter iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. It also protects your major appliances like water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines.  These filters are usually used in applications that have up to 5ppm of iron.

This filter is usually used in conjunction with a whole house water filter.  It doesn’t add any harmful byproducts or the environment.
